ROGENE REID – Born and raised in Toronto, ON. Rogene is a mother of a university graduate; an alumnus of the University of Toronto (BA) and York University (BEd/MEd); a PhD student at OISE/UT; and a Vice Principal in a priority neighbourhood school. A regular renaissance woman, she recently rediscovered her passion for the dramatic arts and has been devoting her time to uncovering the depths of that passion while dedicating herself to exploring new ground in the field of education.

Describe a memorable theatrical experience you had as a child. That would have to be when I was given the role of the lead Rat in a school production of The Pied Piper. It was my first acting gig and another rat stepped on my tail and I had to improvise to cover up that mistake. My improvisation led to audience laughter and in that moment I understood that actors have to be ready for anything to keep a play running smoothly.

Why are you taking The Shakespeare Challenge?
I have joined The Shakespeare Challenge because I believe it’s a good way to introduce children to Shakespeare and I believe that all students, regardless of economic status, should have access to theatre productions. Shakespeare In Action not only provides opportunities for both things to happen, but it’s a company that casts actors who reflect the diversity of Toronto’s demographics, truly making it a reflection of the city.

What’s your favourite sweet treat?
Cheesecake

What’s your favourite Shakespeare Play?
Othello and The Winter’s Tale
